Imagine a signal coming in from the antenna. When that signal is in the positive portion of the cycle, that crystal diode will appear to be a short circuit to ground, and it is to ground that that part of the signal will go—that part of the signal will not go to the headphones. When the incoming RF signal is in the negative part of the cycle, that crystal diode will look like an open circuit. At that point all of the energy will flow through the headphones. The headphones will be getting hit with a steady stream of pulses of DC—DC pulses that are varying in strength at the rate of the modulating frequency. The inertia of the diaphragm will cause it to not respond to the individual radio frequency pulses, but it will instead move with the audio signal that is superimposed on the RF. And, so, we’ll hear voices and music from the headphones.
